| Vehicle Stabilization and Extrication – Hands on Training
Vehicle stabilization is a main component in fire department extrication to immobilize a damaged car, protect trapped patients from further injury, and keep rescue crews safe. A few weeks ago firefighters received classroom training on tools and techniques, and this Monday’s training involved scene size-up, primary stabilization, placement of cribbing and wedges, rescue struts, and chains. Once the vehicle is stable firefighters must gain access to the patient(s). Extrication tools such as pry bars, Halligan tools, hydraulic or battery powered extrication tools are utilized. If necessary, removing roofs, rolling dashboards, or displacing steering columns may be used to clear a safe path for safe patient removal. Firefighters must work together and in constant communication to safely accomplish both stabilization and extrication.
